Hands-On Ranger Experience
Go beyond the classroom with practical nature guide training in tracking, firearm handling, bush navigation, and guest interpretation – preparing you to guide with confidence. This is a nature guide course rooted in real-world experience.
From Sunrise to Starlight
Game drives at first light. Theory in the heat of the day. Bush walks at dusk. Nights under the stars. This is what learning in the wild truly looks like – and what makes this nature guide course so transformative.
Live and Learn in the Wild
Stay in an authentic safari camp surrounded by the sounds of the bush. It’s not just where you train – it’s where you live the rhythms of Botswana nature, waking up to trumpeting elephants and falling asleep to roaring lions. Few nature guide courses offer this level of immersion.

Embark on an unforgettable African wildlife adventure at the safari camp. Days start at sunrise, filled with safari drives and nature walks exploring the African ecosystem. Breaks for meals and afternoon classes on wildlife guiding ideas follow. Evenings bring more bush adventures and post-excursion discussions before a delightful dinner. The course blends classroom sessions with hands-on experiences, utilizing safari vehicles, walking, motorboats, and mokoros. As trainees, you'll lead nature walks, navigate mokoros, and conduct game drives, simulating the responsibilities of a professional nature guide.

In field guide training, expert guides cover Botswana's geology, ecology, astronomy, and weather. Learn navigation, bush survival, and tracking techniques for the African wild. Training includes motorboat/mokoro use based on the season, long game walks, and drives for deep bush exploration. Experience wilderness sleep-outs under the African night sky and firearm handling for safety. Days start early, exploring Botswana's wilderness, returning for lunch, rest, and classes. Afternoon game walks/drives hone new skills. Completion earns a certificate; for professional advancement, take the FGASA NQF2 exam for guiding in South Africa, divided into two two-week sessions.

A few days prior to course completion, theoretical and practical evaluations will take place. The written exam covers all subjects taught during the course. Meanwhile, the practical assessment requires each student to lead a game drive, with the student acting as a guide and their peers as safari guests. This hands-on test involves inspecting the vehicle, leading guests through the wilderness, and describing African plants and animals, assessing your abilities as a nature guide. Upon successfully completing both assessments, you will receive the official FGASA certificate.
Activity Overview

Embark on a day shaped by nature’s rhythm. Mornings start at sunrise with game drives or nature walks, followed by hearty meals and engaging theory sessions. After a midday rest, you're back in the wild – navigating channels by mokoro, tracking animals on foot, or leading your own mock game drives. Evenings bring reflection, fireside chats, and the sounds of the Delta under a star-filled sky.
Each day offers a balance of hands-on learning and deeper reflection. You’ll swap stories with fellow students, ask questions around the fire, and gain confidence not only in your knowledge, but in how you carry yourself in a wilderness setting.
The nature guide course blends immersive bush adventures with classroom-style learning. You’ll train using vehicles, boats, and your own two feet – leading walks, mastering mokoro techniques, and building the confidence to step into a guide’s role. The unpredictability of Botswana nature ensures no two days are ever the same. You’ll feel it in every lesson, every footprint, every sunrise.

Field training covers a wide range of topics, including geology, astronomy, ecology, and weather patterns. You’ll gain essential survival and navigation skills, learn how to interpret animal tracks, and practice guiding in diverse scenarios.
Training takes you deep into the workings of the Delta – how floodwaters shape migration routes, how termites help regulate the landscape, how predator-prey dynamics unfold in real time. It’s the kind of knowledge that reshapes the way you look at the natural world – and forms the core of a true nature guide course.
Seasonal training includes both mokoro and motorboat activities, game drives, and walking safaris. Sleep-outs under the stars and firearm handling are included, offering a well-rounded and thrilling introduction to life as a guide. You’ll become comfortable navigating uncertainty – from sudden animal sightings to weather shifts – and learn to stay calm and focused in the bush.
By the end, you’ll be equipped with the knowledge and tools to guide responsibly, safely, and with a deep sense of place. Whether or not you continue to FGASA certification, you’ll have a rock-solid foundation in professional nature guide skills that few other nature guide courses can match.

Toward the end of your nature guide course, you’ll have the chance to complete the FGASA NQF2 qualification. This includes a written theory exam and a practical assessment, where you’ll lead a mock game drive and be evaluated on your interpretation, safety, and communication.
You’ll act as the guide while fellow students serve as guests, inspecting the vehicle, navigating the bush, and sharing your knowledge of flora and fauna. The test isn’t just about accuracy – it’s about presence, storytelling, and how you hold space in the wild.
Those who pass receive an official FGASA certificate – a recognised first step into the guiding profession in Southern Africa. And even for those not pursuing a guiding career, the exam process offers a powerful sense of accomplishment and closure to your time in the Delta. It's a fitting end to a truly life-changing nature guide course.
After completing the FGASA exam for the nature guide course, you’ll be eligible to take the next step: the Trails Guide Course in the Okavango Delta – a specialised path for those eager to lead walking safaris in big game country.

The camp is located within the subtropical zone of Africa, south of the Okavango Delta, a UNESCO world cultural heritage site since 2014. With diverse wildlife and stunning natural scenery, the camp is an ideal spot for observing the flora and fauna of the region through various game walks and drives.
Climate & Seasons
The Qwapa River area, which is located within the Okavango Delta, experiences two primary seasons - the rainy season and the dry season.
The rainy season occurs between November and April and it is characterised by high temperatures and significant rainfall. During this time, the vegetation in the region becomes lush and green, which is why it is also referred to as the "green season." The average daytime temperatures during this period range between 30°C to 35°C (86°F to 95°F), while the nighttime temperatures are cooler and typically range from 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). The wettest months are January and February, which is when the region experiences the most rainfall.
The dry season occurs from May to October and is characterized by cooler temperatures and little to no rainfall. During this period, the water levels in the delta peak as the floodwaters from the Angolan highlands finally arrive. The average daytime temperatures in the dry season range from 25°C to 30°C (77°F to 86°F), while nighttime temperatures can drop to as low as 5°C to 10°C (41°F to 50°F) in June and July, which are the coldest months. It is essential to pack suitable clothing for both warm and cool weather if you plan to visit the Qwapa River area in the Okavango Delta, as temperatures can vary significantly between day and night, especially during the dry season.
